Who uses this site?
Homeowners in Lynchburg and the towns around it: Forest and Boonsboro in Bedford County, Madison Heights in Amherst County, and Timberlake and Rustburg in Campbell County. Most are dealing with one of three things. Trees over the roof keep filling the gutters. The gutters overflow in heavy rain even when they're clean. Or the downspouts empty right next to the house and the yard, crawl space or basement shows it.
Why are gutters such a chore around Lynchburg?
Because of the trees and the hills. Lynchburg is called the City of Seven Hills, and it sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge along the James River. Older neighborhoods on those hills are shaded by big hardwoods, and the newer subdivisions in Forest and Timberlake were often cut out of woodland, so plenty of houses have oaks, maples, tulip poplars or pines leaning over the roof. Leaves drop in the fall, seed pods and pollen arrive in spring, and needles fall most of the year. On a sloped lot, the gutter on the downhill side of the house can be two or three stories up.
Will gutter guards stop me from cleaning gutters?
A good guard, installed well, cuts the job down to an occasional brush-off or rinse. It won't make the gutters maintenance-free. Pine needles, pollen and shingle grit can still collect on top of a guard, and roof valleys gather the most. What a guard does well is keep leaves, twigs and seed pods out of the trough and the downspouts. Those clogs are what make a gutter overflow and what back up buried drain pipes.
What types of gutter guards are there?
- Stainless micro-mesh. A fine mesh stretched over a rigid frame. It stops the smallest debris, including most needles, and is usually the pick for heavily wooded lots.
- Perforated metal and screens. Aluminum or steel panels with larger holes. A lower-cost choice that handles broad leaves, but needles and small seeds get through.
- Hoods (reverse-curve covers). Water wraps around a rounded nose into the gutter while debris slides off. They work on many homes but can shoot water past the gutter in a hard downpour, and they're visible from the street.
- Foam and brush inserts. Sold for do-it-yourself installs. They sit inside the trough, tend to trap debris and need replacing sooner than metal guards.
How much rain do Lynchburg gutters have to carry?
About 43 inches a year, based on NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Lynchburg Regional Airport. July is the wettest month at a little over 4 inches and February the driest at just under 3. The yearly total isn't the problem so much as the bursts. In early August 2018, the National Weather Service reported up to six inches of rain falling within hours in the Lynchburg area, and the water overtopped the College Lake dam and led to evacuations below it. When that much rain hits a roof in a short time, small or clogged gutters spill over and dump it beside the foundation.
Signs your gutters aren't doing their job
- A curtain of water falling over the gutter edge during rain
- Stains, peeling paint or soft spots on fascia and soffit boards
- Mulch washed out of beds, or a trench in the soil under the drip line
- A damp crawl space or water in the basement after storms
- Seedlings or moss growing in the gutter
- Gutters sagging, holding water or pulling away from the house
Can guards go on the gutters I already have?
Usually, as long as the gutters are sound, sloped toward their downspouts and fastened to solid wood. If they sag, leak at many seams or overflow even when clean, putting guards on them only covers up the problem. In that case, new seamless gutters with guards installed at the same time is usually the better plan.
Does a gutter company need a license in Virginia?
Yes, for most jobs. Virginia law requires a contractor license from the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) for work over $1,000 on a single contract. A Class C license covers jobs over $1,000 and under $30,000, which is where nearly all gutter work falls. You can check a license for free with DPOR's License Lookup, and the license number should be on your contract. The Lynchburg gutter guard guide has more on licensing, permits and hiring.
Is this a gutter company?
No. Lynchburg Gutter Guards is a referral service. We connect you with an independent gutter company that works near your address, and that company quotes, installs and backs the work. Before you sign anything, read our tips for hiring a gutter installer.
